Empowering the Literary Masses

Every individual has unique experience, skills and knowledge. The general public craves enrichment in the form of such information. Information such as how to plaster a wall, repair a car engine, succeed at mathematics or cultivate plants. Yes, this sort of information can usually be found freely on the internet, but in a limited form.

The person with the comprehensive target information does not usually make it available, and therein lies the problem. How can ordinary people share their specialist knowledge with others? The answer is to sell it, in the form of digital media. This might be in the form of eBooks, video, audio, digital art, music, animation, software applications, computer code/games, templates, flash, podcasts, photography, musical scores, presentations and graphic designs, to mention but a few.

So why is this not happening already? Well, because there is no plausible platform to facilitate such endeavours. Ebay was once a solution, but they no longer permit digital downloads. The traditional paper publishing route is fraught with expense, delay and often, disappointment. There are, of course, a multitude of eBook stores on the web, but these tend to be either expensive or contain low quality products. In these credit crunching days it is imperative that quality comes with low cost.

My job as an Editorial Director is to oversee the marriage of quality and low cost. My team and I are constantly encouraging and advising contributing authors, whilst facilitating rapid publication of their work on our site. To ensure that authors can publish without cost to themselves it is necessary to provide free graphic design (covers) and marketing services. We feel that we are empowering the literary masses, providing a platform of opportunity.

I am frequently told that to have ones own publication available for sale throughout the globe is a truly wonderful experience. Authors do not need to be university educated, journalistic, or even creative. The bottom line is that specialist knowledge is of high value. A first attempt at writing can often be a daunting challenge, but guidance for unpublished authors is the responsibility of the publisher. We provide this in both written and verbal forms.

The main motivation for publishing anything is money. Those who are fortunate enough to have their work accepted by major publishing houses are either full-time authors or have spent months compiling their work. The average person might be able to commit a few hours or days to a digital publication. That implies that their contribution is short, but we ensure that it delivers on its title and is of good quality. After all, if I wanted to plaster that wall, repair my car engine, learn maths or care for my plants then I want the information quickly, without reading a huge amount.

The future of publishing lies on electronic paper or readers, and quality always comes before quantity. It is now time to cultivate the untapped literary riches with the digital plough.

Cosmetic lighting and portrait photography

Most people, and especially women, will tell you they have a "good" side.

Simple cosmetic lighting relies on alterations to the angles of illumination, described in "the basic principles of lighting", and " available light portraiture", to flatter the subject and make use of their "good side".

I have aimed to keep this article simple, and avoid reference to techniques that require more specialized lighting equipment.

Overview

How many times have you heard someone say "that's a terrible photograph of me", or even said it yourself?

The point of cosmetic light is avoid unflattering lighting and viewpoints.

Modelling and texture is a consequence of lighting. Moving the angle of illumination closer to the subject/camera axis generally flattens modelling and reduces texture, while increasing the angle increases both.

Similarly, more directional (intense) lighting produces harder shadows, while less directional (soft) lighting diminishes them.

The following tips describe how to deal with common problems by making simple changes. Experimentation is required to achieve the best results.

Making faces wider or narrower

Very few people have perfectly symmetrical faces. For example, one side may be slightly wider or flatter than the other. If the subject is illuminated so that the main light falls on the side that is wider, and the other side is kept in shadow, the viewer's imagination will lead them to think that the shaded side is equal to the lit side. The overall impression will be that the face is wider than it really is. Conversely, if the narrower side of the face is illuminated, the viewer will think that the face is narrower than it really is.

This illusion can be varied by changing the angle of lighting, and the maximum effect comes from very dark shadows, since this leaves more to the viewer's imagination.

Altering eye sockets

If the subject has deep eye sockets, lowering the main light will provide more illumination, and make the eye sockets appear shallower.

Conversely, shallow eye sockets, or bulging eyes can be altered by raising the main light source, and moving it further away from the subject/camera axis (i.e. more to the side). This needs to be done in conjunction with making the fill-in light a little brighter, and the overall effect will be a flattening of the planes of the face.

Large noses

Large noses can be de-emphasized by moving the main light source closer to the subject/camera axis. This will cast a nose shadow on the upper lip, rather than the cheek, so making the nose look less large.

Attractive hair or baldness

Hair can be emphasized by raising the main light and the camera view point. The subject will need to be repositioned slightly, so that they look up to the camera. With a bald subject, this is will have the opposite effect and further emphasize their baldness.

Chins

If the subject has a weak chin, get them to tilt their head back a little, which will make their chin stick out. If they have a strong jaw, have the subject tilt their head forward reduce its prominence.

Soft focus

Soft focus reduces and skin blemishes. Soft focus can be achieved by using the largest lens aperture possible (however the effect will largely be determined by the capabilities of your camera lens). Briefly, larger apertures have a smaller depth of focus, so any feature beyond the focal point will be very slightly blurred. You should always focus on the eyes, but this becomes doubly important when employing any form of soft focus.

In search of the Chicken Wreck and other Jeddah attractions!

For those in the know, scuba diving off the coast of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia is some of the best around. As it is on the Red Sea it offers similar underwater attractions to those available in Egypt but is still relatively undiscovered as a scuba destination. As a result, divers visiting the area have an awful lot of room to themselves and thoroughly enjoy their dives.

The big draw off the coast of Jeddah for scuba fans is the Chicken Wreck. A misfortunate skipper whose cargo was frozen chicken managed to fall foul of the reef and subsequently lost not only his load but also his ship, which now wallows on the reef at a depth of around 15 metres.

Water temperatures in summer are around 29 degrees Celsius, making diving conditions extremely pleasant but in winter temperatures can drop to as low as 22 degrees. Any divers heading for Jeddah on a winter break would be well advised to pack their 5mm wetsuit complete with a hood if they are to avoid any chills!

When not engaged in diving, the main attraction for visitors to Jeddah is the old town, known as al-Balad. The ancient city walls have long gone, but still-surviving historic gates mark out the perimeter of the old town which contains a jumble of old buildings, including rickety coral-built houses. Although obviously in abundant supply due to the large reef just off shore, coral is not a particularly robust building material. As a result many of these two and three storey buildings look like they are teetering on the verge of collapse!

The Beauty of Capturing Life As It Is

Photography allows you to capture the beauty of life as it is. It allows you to capture priceless and precious moments at present and gives you the privilege of looking back on what transpired in the past. Photography allows you to capture life as it is and everything it has to offer.

Photography has evolved together with the ever changing times of the world. It has become vast and very exploratory. It has paved way in expressing ones emotion and feeling as well as capturing every single moment experienced in ones life.

Since photography has become vast, many people have more choices when it comes to choosing or taking a photograph. No need to worry about the unused film that could expire, or the film that was used but was exposed to the direct heat of the sunlight. Now most cameras are digital in form. This gives you more freedom to take countless photos that will help you recollect every single minute spent with your loved ones.

Photography doesn't always have to follow a strict rule. You are not required to take photos of subjects that look meaningful at first glance or of people that are renowned and famous. Photography nowadays allows you to express yourself by capturing whatever you feel like and giving it your own interpretation or meaning.

When you capture a subject, some people might think it is meaningless but for you it could mean the world. Your creative vision allows you to see beyond what others cannot see and allows you to express what your hands and mouth could not express. Photography is mainly a form of expression wherein you get to inform and educate people with what you see and how you deliver them.

If you are into photography, it is best to remember that you are not here to suit the needs and expectations of the people. You are here to express your self and your creativity and to convey a message that people all over the world could understand.

Photography is a gift not many people are blessed with. If you have the vision for it, it is best to start now. You can influence people through photography and it can be your contribution in making this world closer for one another to live in. Photography is something that evolves therefore it is definite you can adapt to it easily. There are no strict rules. You just have to know how to express and impress.

Making Money with Wedding Photography

You may have been taking photos of friends and family for a number of years now, and everyone makes the comment that you should start your own business. Sounds great, but where do you start. Well, there is a great eCourse with everything you need to get started. This article, covers just a couple of things that you will need to be aware of. The course concentrates on wedding photography, however, the techniques apply to any type of photography. It's just that with wedding photography, you have a much better chance of making a good part or full time income, without having to go through years of study and research. Many great photographers began their careers by shooting weddings for friends and family, on a part time basis.

It is possible that you can make a lot of money shooting weddings. Many of the top professional photographers began their careers shooting weddings either for themselves or for a studio. Doing it for yourself of course, means that you get to keep all the money. But, please note that as the photographer, you will often be required to act as the wedding coordinator as well, as these days, most brides cannot afford one. And if there is no wedding coordinator, then it is usually the wedding photographer who will make sure everyone is where they should be most of the time. The downloadable course is designed to help you in all aspects of the days event. As the wedding photographer, you need to make sure that the bride and groom follow your directions. Make them aware that it is in their interest to follow your directions because they want a whole lot of great looking photos for their album.

As you prepare for an event, you need to make sure that all your equipment is ready, and that you have everything you need for the days event. If possible, be sure to have a series of back-ups, a spare camera body, a spare lens and a spare flash in case any of your prime units fails. There is no excuse for the photographer to have to come up to the bride, and try to explain that your camera just broke, and you cannot take any more photos. Again, a death sentence. Your back-up units do not need to be identical to your prime units, but they should be at least close to the same specs. The camera needs to be able to take images at the same resolution as your prime camera, otherwise there will be a noticeable difference in quality of the final prints. The flash unit can be a smaller unit with a slightly lower light output, but if it happens, then this unit will have to do quite a bit of work, so be careful. Make sure that the spare flash is fully charged before taking photos. I have seen a number of photographers get excited about taking some pictures at an event, and they will often just fire away, taking picture after picture, not realizing that the flash is not fully charged for each picture, and so, most of the resulting images will have serious problems, that may not be able to be recovered on the computer. So, make sure that you have good back-up equipment.

Let me ask you, are you ready to take the next step? If you love photography and working with people, the let me ask you if you are ready to start your own wedding photography business? The wedding photography course is designed to get you off to a fast start and making money in wedding photography as quickly as possible. Everything is in this course, including all the forms you will need. They are provided as a computer file that you can change and edit so you can create your very own designs, with your own information. This alone will help you and your business look very professional and save you a lot of time and money, so you can get bookings and start making some money with your very own wedding photography business.

Not all puppy movies you take will veer out refine. Often times, you have to make some shrewd changes in the movies to keep it spotless. Here are some nimble fix thoughts you can use before, and after winning puppy films.

Right before snapping films, you should already adjust your cameras to numerous factors. You can adjust the disparity like not shooting quickly into the sun. Simple Lighting Techniques Pt. 1

Last week I had the opportunity to take some portrait shots for the web site. I was lucky enough to work with a really nice local model, Sam Godden-Wood who has worked for some famous photographers and clients. I used my friend Chris Reeve’s studio, well equipped with Bowen’s lights and accessories. I also used some of my own bits and pieces. My aim was to produce a series of shots, showing how they were taken, using basic accessories with no more than two lights.

I thought this would be a good idea, as I get such a lot of questions about how to take certain shots or what can be done with just a soft box and brolly. So over the next few weeks I will show you how you can take head and shoulders or even full length portrait shots with just two heads.

As you probably know, the ‘high key’ style of photography is very popular at the moment, you know, everything shot against a bleached out white background.

Most photographers shooting this style would use perhaps three or even four lights, two to ‘white out’ the background and maybe another two for the subject. I thought that I would start this series of pictures by showing you an easy way to do this using just two lights, one with a brolly and one with a small 60x60cm soft box, basic accessories you get in Bowens kits and most other lighting kits on the market these days.

To take this shot, set up one light with the 60x 60cm soft box or similar size and stand or sit your subject in front of it, it’s just big enough for one adult or a child. Next, set up the second light with the brolly, this will be our main light. Adjust this light so that it is above the subject and a little to one side, I’ve done a simple diagram for you to follow. As for the exposure it will depend on the hair colour of the subject. So with the soft box turned off, just adjust the main light with the brolly so that you can shoot at around f8 to f11, then turn on the soft box and adjust it to between 1 to 11/2 stops less. Take some test shots and either increase or decrease the power of the soft box, until you get a nice clean high key portrait.
Studio setup

Here are some examples that I shot.

Creating Photography Business Success

It's true that the figures for small business survival are not pretty. Over 90% of all small business keels over in the first 12 months. Most of them didn't plan and had no advice. Those who succeed usually do a bit of research before they jump in.

Once you have done your research, written your business and marketing plans how are you going to manage your time. Your time is best spent liaising with your customers, providing quality photos, promoting the business and remaining organized. The rest you can get help with.

Managing your Time

Becoming your own boss can have some drawbacks and one can be time management. You may be used to working for a boss and working to their time schedule. Now you have your own business it is up to you to set your own time schedule.

Use a PDA, diary, or Outlook Express to plan and track your business time. If you don't, you may find yourself late for appointments and meetings. Being late is totally unprofessional.

It is easy to fall into the trap of putting things off. You need to be focused and disciplined. In comparison with working for an emplyer, you probably find that you'll nedd to be more disciplined with your time and distractions. No longer have you that backstop of wages coming in. You need to make a living.

Personal Time Out

As you start your new business you may find personal time out is almost impossible. So many things to do and just never enough time in a day. Stress can be a de motivator when you're starting out so be careful not to burn the candle at both ends. There is so much to do and now you are on your own, it is all up to you.

If you get overwhelmed maybe hiring a virtual assistant is the answer. Virtual assistants are subcontractors and work on a project basis (longer if you want). Maybe you need help with your website - then there are places on the Internet where you can hire reputable people at a reasonable rate to do all sorts of jobs.

Whatever you are doing it is important to remember there is only so much you can do for yourself. Remember, that if menial tasks are going to affect your schedule, hire someone to help even if on a temporary basis. Don't be afraid to ask for help and anything you spend in this way is tax deductable.

Here are two models which are known by the color they wear and are from two rival groups which always try to retain the position of number one slot. Both Nokia 6500 Bronze and Samsung F700 Black are mid range phones manufactured with the purpose of attracting those people who like to choose phones based on colors. But they also seek some functionalities in them as well Let us find out which of them would be a good choice if you want a color priority phone.

Nokia 500 Bronze sleek and stylish phone is great for its other features. The multimedia section of the phone is heavy enough to meet all your needs like gaming, music and photography. So you have USB, Bluetooth, data GPRS and EDGE are both of class 32, Java MIDP 2.0, media player of MP3/AAC/AAC+ player, Calendar, voice memo and built in hands free. Overall the phone won't be a bad choice for you. But we cannot come the decision until we compare the phone with an equivalent phone like Samsung F700 Black.

The F700 is a triband 3G HSDPA phone with some interesting features in it. Its a touchscreen phone with a TFT 256K colors 3.2 inches color screen. This is a great kick to Nokia 6500. There is also a card slot which is missing in 6500 Classic model. The phone has additional EMS facility which too is missing in Nokia 6500 Bronze. The camera is quite advanced with features like 3.15 MP, 2048x1536 pixels, flash, auto focus, video capture and a secondary VGA videocall camera. Digital SLR Camera Review

When purchasing a digital camera, it is often a tough decision to choose between a SLR digital camera and a compact digital camera. With this digital SLR camera review, we will cover the most important aspects in the decision making process.

SLR Cameras are your best choice among digital cameras if you want to do more than take family vacation, holiday, and birthday pictures. Despite the fact that many point-and-shoot compact digitals have increasingly higher megapixels, the SLR is the choice for serious photographers and photography hobbyists. This digital SLR camera review will cover the importance of purchasing a SLR camera if you are serious about your photography.

The most obvious reason for choosing a SLR camera is that you have the capacity to produce photography that is much more artistic. With SLR cameras, you have manual options that you don't have with point-and-shoot cameras and this is what makes the biggest difference in how you can use your SLR camera artistically.

When trying to get that perfect shot, your camera must be ready in an instant. SLR cameras have instant start up and minimal shutter lag. Most point-and-shoot compacts have a 2 to 3 second shutter lag which means you are going to miss that shot. The shutter lag in SLR cameras is a fraction of a second so you get the shot you want.

Another plus in SLR cameras in that they can take interchangeable lenses. This is very important for those nature and sports photos when you often can't get close to your subject. With a SLR camera, you can change to a zoom lens and get those close-ups. Great battery life, large image sensor, fast continuous shooting, and the ability to store RAW images are other pluses of SLR cameras.

Some of the not so good qualities I would like to point out in this SLR digital camera review is that these cameras are large. So, if you want to be able to fit them in your purse or bag, they're not going to fit - not so good on vacations. They are also much heavier than subcompact digital cameras and compact digital cameras weighing in at about ½ pound and of course, they are more expensive.

In this digital SLR camera review, we covered manual options, interchangeable lens, shutter lag time, and size. These are all factors that you need to take into consideration when making a decision as to purchase a SLR digital camera as opposed to a compact digital cameras.

Phang Nga Bay Sea Climbing Safari, Thailand

A walk across the street takes us away from Ao Nang's bustle, past the food stalls selling barbecued chicken and papaya salad and away from the shops selling sunglasses and sarongs. We clamber onto the longtail and head for a shimmering, turquoise-blue waterway, en route to one of the Andaman Sea's most tranquil destination islands, Koh Yao Noi, Thailand. We're not going to hurry there, though, as it would be rather silly to rush across one of the most beautiful bays on the planet.

If the celestial powers had travel-sense it would be deemed a sin to come to the Andaman coast of Thailand and not see the Hong Islands - an archipelago of towering limestone karsts jutting vertically out of the water and looming above us as we cruise Thailand's Phang Nga bay.

We soon find ourselves meandering towards one of the bay's many hidden beaches, on Koh Lading ('paradise island' in Thai). This is a small but picturesquely lovely stretch of white sand approached across emerald waters, gliding just a metre above a placid coral reef. We slowly approach the bleached-white beach with its giant coconut trees and its lush jungle backdrop, not wishing to disturb the tranquility by using the boat's engine too much. There are a few tourists scattered about, lounging on the warm sand or snorkelling with the fish, quietly contemplating and complementing the peaceful scene we have encountered. All is tranquillity and serenity until the moment we spot the bouldering wall, our eyes lighting up as we size up another of nature's playgrounds. It looks like a worthy challenge for us to measure ourselves against, its sharp, over-hanging limestone walls and stalactites creating all sorts of contortionistic challenges (or 'problems' in climbing jargon).

I am surprised to hear that this bouldering wall (not the one pictured left, which is a deep water solo wall) is actually judged to be a relatively easy one, as it looks really difficult to me. Bouldering is a rope-free variation of rockclimbing, where the climber sheds his gear and keeps only his rubber shoes and chalk-bag (and his shorts unless he really wants to show off). When the climber falls off the soft beach cushions his fall - unless the climber ascends too high, bouldering is as safe as a walk in a park. It is also an extreme work-out for the upper body in which it is easy to damage tendons and sinews.

My climbing partner Fon manoeuvres left to right and up and down with yogic bodily contortions, body held nearly parallel to the ground. A handful of day-trippers relaxing on the beach watch, in puzzled but idle amusement, no doubt wondering why anybody would bother to exert themselves in such an extreme fashion in such a relaxing place. Fon moves with feminine agility and poise and is made to look even more graceful by comparison with me, her slightly superannuated Western male climbing companion. I seem to be not so much rock climbing as rock-falling-offing - this thankfully doesn't hurt, due to Thailand's soft sand cushioning my frequent falls. After a while Fon is glowing with perspiration, whilst I have virtually turned into a human waterfall. Thankfully the welcomingly cool sea is just a step away.

Wary of the sea urchins nesting on the reef's floor we float on life jackets to the other side of the bay and find ourselves peering through windows of rocks out onto the myriad islands rearing sheer out of the shallow but deep blue of Thailand's Andaman Sea. Back in the boat, our boatman is unsure if the tide is too low for us to be able to get into the Hong lagoon. As the long-tail boat's engine fades to a stop we creep around the corner and see the opening to the lagoon, seemingly guarded by a solitary bird standing in the water. The boat drifts until it rests in the sand and there we are, standing in the middle of an enormous lagoon encompassed by rock buttresses on all sides, like worshippers in the nave of a vast karst cathedral. One massive stalactite is suspended overhead, dripping with pure mineral water and donating a sweet afternoon drink and shower. The Hong archipelago, the first stop on our island-hopping Andaman Sea climbing safari, is an archetypical tropical paradise.

We leave the lagoon in search of a clandestine beach to melt into for a while before travelling on to Koh Yao Noi. It doesn't take long to find a completely deserted bay, where we collapse and take naps in the shade of the trees - there are no suitable rocks around for us to play on. In the shallows a large monitor lizard takes the plunge and swims past our boat, its family of three concealed by the rocks and waiting for it across the bay, revealing themselves as it approaches.

Arriving on Koh Yao Noi, we receive what is almost door-to-door service, but would be better described as beach-front to beach-front service, as the boat comes to a halt on the beach directly in front of our resort. We are greeted with sweet welcome drinks as we absorb the tranquil beauty of the Koh Yao Island Resort, at the northern end of the island. Large coconut and palm trees stand on the bright green grass, shading the luxury bungalows. Each chalet faces the resort's private beach, with its view of the islands further away outlined in differing shades of blue. The silhouettes of nearby islands are superimposed on those of islands in the middle distance, with both sets of silhouettes superimposed on the outlines of islands further away.

Each of the three sets of silhouettes is a different shade of blue, creating the most beautiful island tableaux in Thailand this author has ever seen.

Our hotel is all that you would expect ask of a tropical beach resort in Thailand. Crisp white linen sheets adorned with tropical flowers on an oversized bed, an outdoor shower made private with natural stone tiles piled high and a separate living room mostly enclosed by sheer drapes, shimmering in the moonlight and creating a scene of such serenity that I stop for a second to savour the moment. The resort provides us with motorbikes and we follow the dirt road to Thakao Seafood Restaurant for a veritable feast - and for less than the price of a McDonald's back home. Banana flower salad, vegetables fried in oyster sauce and fresh fish are the prefect end to a day on the water.

After a leisurely-spent morning sunning ourselves by the pool and sipping fruit shakes we are back in the boat with ropes and gear in tow, eager for an afternoon of climbing and photography. We stop at the pier to pick up lunch, fried rice wrapped in banana leaves, then race to get onto the rock-climbing routes. The boatman pulls up to a spindly wooden ladder leading to a bamboo platform that sits at the bottom of the rock wall and provides spectators with a comfortable viewpoint to watch the action. Soon Fon is on belay and I am ready to climb. As I rise higher and higher the panoramic view of all the islands and lagoons becomes even more immense and my beloved cousin Diana, bobbing up and down in the water below, becomes smaller and smaller. This rock-face has arguably the second most beautiful view in Thailand, after Railay's incomparable Thaiwand Wall. There is also a fair mixture of grades, so it is a good destination for the relative novice as well as for the expert crag-hanger.

Complete beginners are recommended, before coming to Koh Yao Noi, to spend three days learning to climb on Railay or, better still, Koh Phi Phi. After the climbing we pause on the boat journey back in order to watch a party of Western residents playing on a deep-water slack-line. This is a 4-centimetre-wide, 30- metre-long band stretched between 2 islands, which the person attempts to balance on while walking from one island to the next - and almost invariably fails to manage, ending up with a 6 metre drop into the sea and a swim back to the starting point. What is it about watching people accidentally falling into water which makes spectators feel so happy?

Online Photo Developing - Way To Spread and Share 'Smiles'!

From the last ten years or so, advent of digitalized photo developing solutions, photography has undergone a drastic change. With virtual media of photo processing, taking photos, sharing photos and getting prints of your photos have never been easier, more feasible and also cheaper. There are countless websites prevailing and still coming up with cost effective, web based photo processing solutions to allow people accessing photo developers from comforts of their own houses. You do not have walk down to local photo developing shops where you can hardly do anything to get your photos developed and printed the way you want.

Many a times, local photo processing vendors overlook various defects and develop without correcting them. For example, red eye effects is one of the most common defects we come across in photos printed via traditional photo developing solutions. Coming of digital photo printing solutions has changed the scenario and given away ample options to correct and alter our photos the way we want including removal of red eye defects, adding special effects like blurred, adding background, highlighting and brightening special part of the photos along with basic editing like cropping unwanted corners, resizing, altering or adjusting colors, contrast of images, rotating pictures and many more.

Another significant advantage of using digital photo developing solutions is ability to share photos faster and in more feasible manner. Previously, with traditional photo printing options people had to wait for getting their photos arrived after getting printed to share with friends and folks and other acquaintances.

Role of Graphic Designers for Achieving Online Success

Firstly graphic designers gather important data from their clients, conduct research, and refer to company briefs provided by their clients. Secondly different design layouts are prepared from which the customer chooses the most appropriate one. Then, to make the graphic design attractive and complete, the elements of color, motion, animation, and sound/visual effects are incorporated into the designs. Thereafter the short listed and complete designs are shown to the client or the company's creative director for their approval.

Photography Adventures With Demekin

Love images? Love photographs? Love photography? Then you are going to love this gadget that has been one of the favorites of photographers. This is the Superheadz Demekin and it is quite a classic.

And so you might think that the camera must be really something because it has a unique name. Actually, its name, demekin, is a word in Japanese and it is used to refer to a goldfish that is pop-eyed. Aside from that, the word has also been used as the name of the smallest fisheye camera. So if you are going to put two and two together, you would be getting a goldfish and the fisheye camera. So in the end, you would be having a camera that gets really great photos and these photos turn out to give people the idea of just what a fish sees.

Now with the Superheadz Demekin camera that can be found over at Gadget Epoint, this one is quite a surprise. See, it comes with a really interesting package. This is because the package looks just like a fishbowl. So you got the Demekin camera in a fishbowl. Really makes sense, doesn't it? Well, it would if you knew about this already. However, if you did not, then you would just think that the package was good.

There are quite a number of cameras in the market however this Demekin camera has simply got a great amount of wide angle so think of all the images that you would be able to take. And despite that, you would notice that the camera is still compact so it is not really much of an eater of space. It also uses 110 film so you better get those films ready.

Forget Your Ex, or Forget the Sex

Study reveals laws of love online -

Men hoping to attract women online should avoid pictures with their exes, shots of their intimate body parts and self penned poetry according to a study by Singles365.com, looking into the laws of online attraction. Women also need to avoid images of their exes, family shots and old photographs of themselves if they are going to get the best hit rates for their online dating profiles.

It seems that less is more for women searching for an online partner: professional studio photography turns off 20% of women, with a further 19% citing elaborate likes and dislikes as being off-putting when they are looking at a man's digital calling card.

Men and women both agree on the degree of honesty that they display online about themselves. 20% of respondents admit to being less honest online than offline and 40% expect someone they meet to be less honest online.

Steve Pammenter, spokesperson for Singles365.com comments:

"Online dating has evolved into a socially acceptable way of meeting new people, although it brings with it new rules of engagement. The advent of video dating is the next generation of technology that will help people identify attractive partners online. Photographs, which are clearly particularly hazardous, only make up part of the overall impression that a profile offers once video dating is brought into the mix. Just don't recite poetry in your video profile!"

The study into the laws on online attraction canvassed the opinions of over 2,000 British singles to establish the top turn offs for online and offline dating.

Choosing the Right and Best Digital Camera Battery

Popular alkaline batteries are relatively inexpensive and widely available, but they drain at a fast pace. If you happen to use all of your camera's features, you can deplete a set of alkaline batteries in about 30 minutes. You should then consider spending a little more up front for a battery charger and few rechargeable batteries. Many digital cameras work with the popular, rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. Alkaline batteries were not designed to supply the high power drains demanded by digital cameras and other modern digital equipments. Despite having a large energy capacity, alkaline batteries are not capable of delivering their energy rapidly enough for your digital camera, causing it to shut down.

Generally speaking, the heavy energy consumers in a digital camera are the LCD screen and the motors that move the mechanical components of the camera such as the lenses. The other big energy consumer is the motor. Digital cameras have motors the move the lenses either to change the zoom or to focus. Motors consume relatively a lot of energy when moving the digital camera optical components. The flash is a big energy consumer too. Shooting photos using the flash consumes more energy that shooting photos without flash.

Digital cameras, and in particular their LCD screens, demand large electrical currents from your batteries. If you are using lots of alkaline batteries for your electronic devices you'll probably want to switch to rechargeable NiMH batteries ASAP. Not only will the NiMH batteries power a digital camera (or most other electronic devices) much longer than alkaline batteries will, but they are much less expensive to use.

Many digital camera manufacturers offer proprietary lithium ion battery systems with their cameras. These are indeed sophisticated batteries with very long life-span. Sony's Info-lithium battery system is perhaps the best example of this technology. Apart from offering very long life, this system can give an accurate measurement of the amount of operating time left on a charge. The minus factor of lithium ion battery systems is that these proprietary systems are very expensive.

When it comes to power, the ability to use a variety of battery types can be more important than any single type a camera may use. For instance, lithium-ion rechargeable batteries generally last the longest, but if you are out in some remote places, you have no way to recharge them, and you should probably have a backpack full of disposables. Your best bet is a camera that interchangeably supports rechargeables and long-life disposables.

Digital Photography: Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority Modes.

Aperture and shutter speed settings can seem confusing for a new photographer. Luckily your semi-automatic settings, Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority, make them a little easier to understand. Do you know how to use them?

Earlier SLR cameras (film) were fully manual. A photographer needed to understand aperture and shutter speed settings and know how to use them. Then came automatic modes, which let the camera do the thinking for you. This was (and still is) a fairly reliable way of getting a well-exposed picture, but it took creativity out of the hands of the photographer. As time went by, few people learned the manual skills. So as camera technology improved, the quality of most photos actually got worse.

Today we have the best of both worlds. All DSLR cameras and most compact digital cameras have manual and automatic modes, but they also offer semi-automatic modes. That means you can be a little creative, and still allow the camera to control the exposure for you.

If you have Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority on your camera, but never quite understood what they were for, this article is for you.

First up, what are Aperture and Shutter Speed? These are the two mechanisms for controlling the level of exposure in your photos; whether your photo will be overexposed, underexposed, or just right. To explain them properly would take a much more in-depth article, so here is just a quick run-down.

Aperture is the size of the hole that lets the light in on your photo. Think of it like the iris in your eye - as the light gets lower, you open the aperture to let more light in. Aperture also controls depth of field, which affects how much of your picture is in focus. When you have a small aperture, you have a large depth of field, so your subject and the surroundings may be in focus. When your aperture is wide, the depth of field is much smaller, so there is much less area around the subject that will be in focus.

Shutter speed is the duration of the exposure. The shutter must be open to allow the light in; therefore the longer it is open, the brighter the exposure will be. Shutter speed also controls how you capture movement in a photo. If you want to freeze a moving subject, you need to use a fast shutter speed.

The trick is to combine your aperture and shutter speed settings for the best result. If you get the balance right, your photo will be perfectly exposed, and you will have creative control over the look of the image.

Of course, this is easier said than done. To help you manage the challenge, you now have the option of Aperture and Shutter Priority. These semi-automatic modes allow you to take control of one setting, and the camera sets the other automatically. This lets you have some creative input, with the safety net of knowing the camera will take care of the level exposure. You decide how you want your photo to look, and the camera will make sure it is correctly exposed.

So which do you choose: Shutter Priority or Aperture Priority? Well, it's all a matter of...priorities.

Remember that aperture controls depth of field. So if the range of focus is the critical element in your photo, choose aperture priority. You can set a small aperture to maximise the depth of field, or a large aperture to concentrate the focus on the subject. Either way, the camera will adjust the shutter speed to give you the best exposure.

Shutter speed controls movement in a photo. If controlling a moving subject is the critical aspect of your picture, choose shutter priority. This will allow you to set a fast shutter speed to freeze the moving subject, or a slow shutter speed to capture blurred motion. Whichever shutter speed you choose, the camera will take care of the aperture so your photo is correctly exposed.

So your choice of Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority depends on the type of subject you are shooting, and how you want it to look in the final photograph. It really is an ideal marriage of art and technology, allowing you to concentrate on your creative choice rather than on technical issues.

There is so much to be learned on this topic, a short article like this is just a starting point. However if you have been reading your camera manual and scratching your head (like many people do) this quick introduction in layman's terms should help you to make some sense of Aperture and Shutter Priority.

Cellar Conversion Ideas

If you own a home with a cellar or basement, you could gain a lot of extra living space with a cellar conversion. A cellar or basement conversion is just another term for a remodel, except for the fact that you are not just updating or changing the look; you are converting your basement or cellar to be used for something different.

The only real problem that you may come across with a cellar conversion is the dampness that is found in below ground rooms. This is easily fixed with cellar tanking, so why not make the most of your cellar or basement and convert it to additional living space.

With a cellar conversion the possibilities are endless; you could convert the space into a wine cellar, extra bedrooms, an office area or family room. Even commercial buildings with below ground space could make the most of the area by using that space as additional retail area, or storage.

Some great cellar conversion ideas include,

  • Additional bedrooms: This is a good idea if you find that you are in need of additional sleeping space. If you have a large family, and find that the children sharing rooms isn’t working out so well, you can always convert your cellar or basement into additional bedrooms.
  • Separate living space: You could easily turn your basement into a separate living area. A small apartment is a good way to give a college aged child some independence, or possibly you may have parents who need to live with you, but also need a measure of independence. Aside from these uses, converting your basement into an apartment could be a means of extra income for your family if you rent it out.
  • A home theater room: That unused basement space could make the ideal theater room where you can enjoy the latest in high tech entertainment.
  • A hobby or workroom: Just about any hobby can benefit from a workroom. You can convert your basement or cellar into a photography studio, a place where you can getaway to do your scrap booking, painting, or whatever it is that you love to do. That unused room in your basement is the perfect place to create a haven for your hobby.
  • A fitness room: Why not take all the unused room in your basement and create a spa and fitness center right in your own home. Use part of your basement for gym equipment; plus enclose an area for a steam room and hot tub.
  • A game room: Many people opt to turn their cellar or basement into a game room where friends and family can get together to play some pool, video games, etc. Add a bar to one end of your basement and fill the rest with some great home games.
  • Wine cellar: If you are a lover of fine wines, you may want to do a cellar conversion to create a wine cellar. Basement tanking is important with wine cellars, as you have to ensure that the cellar does not become damp; aside from this you will also want to control the temperature of the wine cellar.
  • Office space: If you run a home based business, the basement area is a great place to convert to office space. In most cases the basement is at least partially separate from the rest of the home, which provides a peaceful working environment. In the case of office space, where computer equipment may be placed in the area, cellar tanking is extremely important. A damp or wet basement can ruin electronics and computer equipment.
  • Food Storage: If you need extra room for food storage, a cellar conversion that includes basement tanking is a great idea for added food storage space. As long as you can keep the room dry, you can store canned goods, as well as dried goods in your cellar.

With a basement conversion there are many things you may have to take into consideration that you wouldn’t for a basic remodel. Some factors that you may have to think about when doing a cellar or basement conversion include, plumbing, electrical wiring, heating and cooling, telephone, cable TV, and lighting.

For many basements or cellars there is another important factor to converting the area to living space, and that is dampness. Below ground rooms often tend to have a problem with dampness, which is why you should consider waterproofing your cellar if you would like to convert it to living space. Cellar tanking will ensure that your new living space remains dry and free from water damage, or possible mold.

There are a couple different methods of basement tanking, or waterproofing your cellar. One of the best methods of basement tanking is tanking slurry. When you use a multi coat tanking treatments, you can rest easy that your basement or cellar will remain dry, as this is the perfect solution to waterproofing below ground rooms. Another advantage of the tanking slurry method of waterproofing is that it is useful in situations where damp proof course treatment may not be possible.

Slurry tanking treatments are composed of a mixture that provides great water resistance, flexibility, salt resistance, and good adhesion. Tanking slurry is easy to use; all that is necessary is adding water to the mixture and a brush to apply to the surface you wish to waterproof.

If you are in need of extra living or storage space, there is no need to purchase another house, all you have to do is make use of the space you already have available to you with a cellar conversion, but don’t forget to protect your investment with basement tanking to keep everything nice and dry.

Quick and Easy Sydney Travel Guide

Sydney is perhaps the most beautiful city in the southern hemisphere of the globe. Splendor, glamour, glitz, urbanity are the defining traits of this city which is located towards the extreme south of Australia. Situated beside the sea it happens to be the capital of the Australian province of New South Wales.

No one will ever argue that this cosmopolitan city is one of the most beautiful places on earth and abounds in gardens, parks, museums, beaches, a harbor, and a spectacular bridge. The landscape of Sydney has become synonymous with the modern architectural wonder - the world renowned Sydney OPERA HOUSE - built like a half furled lotus blossom.

The moment you utter the name of this city, a vision of the OPERA HOUSE is conjured up before the eyes of people. Every year millions of tourists are attracted to Sydney because of the bountiful gifts it has to offer starting from lovely silvery beaches and scenic locales to aquatic wonders and various kinds of water sports facilities.

The best time to visit Sydney is from March to October, that is, during the autumn and winter season. It is better to avoid Sydney in summer because of the troublesome rain.

Sydney was originally the home of aboriginal tribes of Australia and they resided there for a long time. They have left behind the evidence of their existence in the rock carvings and cave paintings in and around Sydney. The floodgates of oppression on the aborigines were opened in the 16th century when Britain colonized Australia. Sydney happened to be the first place where the imperialists set up their first colony.

At the helm was Arthur Philip who established the colony in and around Sydney cove in 1788. From then on the aboriginal tribes were pushed back into the interiors of the country and the whole of the region, now referred to as Sydney, became the abode of white skinned dwellers from Britain.

Sydney, during its genesis, used to be the dumping ground of convicts deported from Britain and poor people trying to seek a fortune on foreign shores. But that was long back. Sydney is at present one of the top ultra modern cities of the world and has progressed both economically and culturally, in leaps and bounds.

This cosmopolitan city is all poised to take on the world and compete with the superpowers and heavyweights of the western hemisphere. The focus of the whole world was shifted to this city when it hosted the Olympics a few years ago.

Sydney has a host of attractive sights and places of interest to offer to its visitors. They include THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM, THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART, ART GALLERY OF NEW SOUTH WALES, POWERHOUSE MUSEUM, AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM, TARONGA ZOO, THE OPERA HOUSE, SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE, PYLON LOOKOUT, SYDNEY AQUARIUM, ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS, LUNA PARK, BONDI BEACH, AUSTRALIAN CENTRE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY, KINGS CROSS, DARLING HARBOUR, THE ROCKS, FORT DENISON, SYDNEY TOWER, CHINESE GARDEN OF FRIENDSHIP, and cruise trips on WATSONS BAY.

Metering Techniques

Metering is a vital part of any photography, whether inside the studio or out on location.

I know that some photographers these days who use digital cameras may feel that they don't need to use a separate flash meter in the studio, but let me tell you, a meter is an invaluable tool. Most studio photographers I know wouldn't be without a flash meter and there is a good range of models available on the market today.

Using a flash meter is easy, they all work in pretty much the same way. Some may have more buttons and read outs, but they all do the same job. Basically by setting the ISO of the film and the shutter sync speed of the camera and the flash meter will tell you what aperture to shoot at.

If you are using film, set the ISO as usual, if you are shooting with a digital camera I would recommend a setting of 200 ISO.

The camera shutter, or sync (short for synchronisation) speed used with flash is important, you can use any speed between a 60 th and a 250 th, but I would recommend 125 th of a second. This speed will give you plenty of latitude and you won't get any 'cut off'. Cut off is caused by using a shutter sync speed that is too fast for the lights that you are using and only half of the shot will be exposed, the other half will be 'cut off' and not exposed because of the speed of the shutter opening and closing too quickly.

I have used Gossen and Sekonic meters and both companies make great products. Most meters these days are digital and have a simple read out and display. To trigger the flash, meters have a coax socket, so that a standard sync lead can be attached from a flash head to the meter. Or if you have an assistant to fire your lights you can use most meters cordless! Measurements are very accurate, usually in tenths of a stop.

So far so good, but how do we actually use the meter?

You can do this in a number ways. By measuring the light that falls on the subject and setting the aperture that the meter gives you. Or by measuring the light on the subject, then reducing or increasing the power of the lights to give you the aperture that you want.

Let me explain, say that you have a simple two light set up for a portrait shot and you want to shoot at between f 8 and f11 to give you good depth of field. By using the meter we can determine the amount of light falling on the subject and by adjusting the power of the lights up or down, we can get the aperture that we need, say f11.

Also by using the meter we can easily set a 'ratio' of say two to one or even three to one. A ratio, meaning that we can set one of lights as a main light and the second light as a fill in. We can do this by using the meter to help us adjust the lights and set them two stops or three stops apart. So our main light will give f11 and our fill in will give us f5.6 / f8.

This ratio will help to build some shadow into the picture which gives the face of the subject shape and form. If we lit the portrait with both lights at equal power, the light will be even, but rather bland, by introducing a ratio we can get more interest in the picture.

Where do we actually point and position the meter?

Common sense is used here, obviously the measurements are taken from the 'highlight' areas. When we shoot people the lightest areas will be on the skin tones and maybe clothing. When we look at a person the forehead, cheeks and noses are the best places to meter as they will reflect the most light. If the subject has white clothes we can also take measurements from these areas. So position the flash meter so that the 'cell' that receives and measures the light is exactly on one of these 'highlights'.

With the meter programmed and the sync lead attached position the meter on a highlight area, take a reading of each light and a further reading pointing the meter direct at the camera. You can then begin as we have already said to adjust the lights up and down in power, either to set a ratio, or to select a preferred aperture. When the lights are fully adjusted and the preferred aperture or ratio is achieved the shot can be taken.

So we can use a flash meter to help us adjust our lights to give us a working aperture, to set a ratio to create subtle shadow areas and save us a great deal of time and money whether shooting on digital or film. For more technical work, such as multiple flashes, a flash meter is invaluable

If you are using studio lighting without a flash meter, but you've thinking about buying one, I would look at meters made by Gossen or Sekonic they are all very well designed and easy to use and from companies that have been making meters for a long time.
